The June/July issue is here!
The June/July issue of HELEN is in the mail and at local retailers. Look for local American Idol contestant Amanda Overmyer on the cover. She talks to HELEN about her debut album, Solidify, life after the show and, of course, those Idol judges. Be sure to catch Amanda performing in Lafayette on July 18th at Dancing in the Streets. Check out www.amandaoverymer.com.> for more tour dates and locations.
Women and Philanthropy
The women of Lafayette and the surrounding areas put time, talent and treasure into many different organizations. These charitable women share with HELEN their reasons for giving back and show just how easy making a difference can be. To learn more about women and philanthropy, visit the Women's Philanthropy Institute at IUPUI or the Women for Purdue site.>
Are you addicted to alcohol?

How do you know if your drinking habits are social, abusive, or downright dependent? According to addictions counselor Lisa Werth, cravings, loss of control, blacking out, driving drunk and regular hangovers are just a few factors that point towards abusive behavior.
To compare your drinking patterns to those of other women your age and to get information on help that is available locally, visit www.alcoholscreening.org. This site provides immediate and confidential results.
Support Ovarian Cancer Research
When Lisa Ariano lost her daughter, Elena, to ovarian cancer at the age of 23, she and her family wanted to do something. In addition to starting a research fund (read all about it in the June issue!), they also are out to raise awareness of ovarian cancer. For information on signs and symptoms, click here!

Check out Emerge Global
In May, HELEN hosted Emerge Global, an international organization with local ties. Local Harrison High School graduate Ellen Sojka is the Sri Lanka director. Through jewelry sales, young girls who are dealing with motherhood as a result of rape or incest are able to learn a trade and create a life for themselves. For every piece of jewelry sold, 50 percent of the sale goes directly back to the young woman who made the piece of jewelry. To see photos from the evening, click here!
